One of the most emotionally raw songs in Christian hip-hop just got major mainstream recognition.

Lecrae's "Headphones," featuring Killer Mike and T.I., is among the nominees for the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award at the 2026 BET Awards, airing live June 28 at 8 PM ET on BET.

The nomination is significant - not just because it lands a CHH record on one of entertainment's biggest stages, but because of what the song is actually about.

"Headphones" was inspired by the death of Lecrae's cousin, who overdosed on fentanyl - what Lecrae described as "the deepest form of grief" he had experienced. The song speaks on grief and survivor's guilt, with the central message that loss spares no one, believer or not. Each artist brings his own verse of personal loss - and somehow, the song never loses hope.

Lecrae described the collaboration as "us talking about our own grief of dealing with loss. Hip-hop has taken so many losses, so it's like a collective grieving process." Of bringing T.I. and Killer Mike on board, he said: "TIP and Killer Mike are the epitome of hip-hop. They represent the foundation of the Atlanta hip-hop scene. They're two of the best lyricists, two of the most thought-provoking individuals, and they're courageous."

When T.I. heard the message, he immediately wanted to be part of it. Together, the Atlanta rappers bring a fresh hope to hip-hop and a heavenly call to those they've lost.

The song's chorus says it plainly: "My brother got headphones in Heaven - I hope he hear this song." That's not a gospel trope. That's a prayer.
