In an era of skyrocketing concert prices, Phoebe Bridgers is doing something almost unheard of - playing Madison Square Garden for just one dollar.
The indie singer-songwriter announced a surprise show at the iconic New York arena on June 4, capping a month of intimate pop-up performances across the country where tickets have also been going for just $1.
The show, presented by TIDAL, uses a random lottery system instead of standard ticket sales - a move designed to keep seats out of the hands of scalpers and bots. Fans had to register before June 1 at 11:59 p.m. ET, with selected attendees notified by 1 p.m. on June 2.
All proceeds benefit the Community Justice Exchange's National Bail Fund Network. Fans were also given the option to donate more at registration, though a higher donation did not improve selection odds.
There's another twist - no phones, smart watches, or recording devices are allowed inside. All devices will be secured in Yondr pouches, making this one of the rare arena shows that exists entirely in the moment.
The MSG show caps a stretch of surprise appearances in smaller markets where Bridgers has been debuting new music - strongly hinting at a long-awaited third solo album.
Generosity at that scale - giving up arena-level profits for a cause - is the kind of story worth telling regardless of genre.
