The entertainment world is mourning the loss of one of television's most beloved character actors.
Anthony Head, best known for playing librarian and mentor Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at 72 of complications from pneumonia, his family confirmed Friday. His daughters, Emily and Daisy Head, announced the news in a statement to the BBC.
"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father, Anthony Head," the statement read. "He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family."
Head played Rupert Giles - the Watcher and father figure of Buffy Summers - across all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, who mourned his passing on Instagram with a quote from the show: "Tell Giles I figured it out and I'm ok. Well I don't have it figured out and I'm not ok. But I know I'm the lucky one because I knew you."
Head passed away just six months after the death of his longtime partner Sarah Fisher, who died suddenly from cancer in December 2025 at the age of 61. His daughters' statement acknowledged the weight of the season: "Our grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind, but we know his legacy will live on, in the shows he was a part of, and in the audiences that love them."
More recently, Head played the villainous team owner Rupert Mannion on Apple TV+'s Emmy-winning Ted Lasso, bringing the same quiet authority to a very different kind of Rupert. He is also remembered for roles in Little Britain, BBC's Merlin, and The Iron Lady opposite Meryl Streep.
For generations of fans, Anthony Head was Giles - the steady, faithful presence who showed up when everything was falling apart. In a world that often celebrates loudness, he made gentleness look like strength. That is a legacy worth remembering.
He is survived by his daughters Emily and Daisy Head.
