Nobody saw this one coming - and that was the point.
NEEDTOBREATHE dropped "Last Drink" as a complete surprise on June 17, with no announcement, no rollout, and no buildup. Just the song, straight to streaming, with a note from the band explaining exactly why it couldn't wait.
"This one came together for us so quick that we felt like we needed to get it out in time to play it on this tour," the band wrote on Facebook, sharing a black-and-white photo of themselves running through it in rehearsal. "We hope you enjoy it."
Frontman Bear Rinehart went deeper in his own post, explaining what the song is really about: "'Last Drink' is a song about the freedom that comes from the long surrender. Sometimes pursuing what we care about means leaving other things behind.
There were several things I chose to leave behind in this chapter of my life, but the things I gave up in the last year haven't felt like sacrifices at all in hindsight. Their absence has created more space for me to care about the ones I love."
The band described "Last Drink" as a natural extension of their recent album The Long Surrender.
Produced by nine-time Grammy Award winner Dave Cobb - known for his work with Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, and Sturgill Simpson - The Long Surrender marked the sound of a band awakened to their truest purpose more than two decades into their career.
Since emerging as one of the most beloved acts in modern rock, NEEDTOBREATHE has earned multiple Grammy nominations, amassed billions of streams, and built a passionate global fanbase around their themes of redemption, resilience, and hope.
Bear closed his note the same way the song feels - quietly, without fanfare: "I'm thankful to the band for joining me on this journey, and I'm thankful to y'all for listening."
"Last Drink" is out now on all streaming platforms.
