The murder case surrounding Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk took another dramatic turn Monday as prosecutors unveiled disturbing new details during the first day of Tyler Robinson's preliminary hearing in Utah.
The hearing, which will determine whether there is enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial, quickly became an emotional ordeal for Kirk's family. His widow, Erika Kirk, was forced to leave the courtroom twice as prosecutors presented graphic evidence and described the moments leading up to her husband's fatal shooting.
Among the biggest revelations was testimony that the alleged gunman was reportedly seen on the Utah Valley University campus four separate times on the day of the shooting. According to investigators, he allegedly visited the campus twice before the attack, returned during the shooting, and then allegedly came back again just after midnight. Prosecutors are using that timeline to strengthen their case connecting Robinson to the crime.
Defense attorneys, however, pushed back aggressively, arguing that surveillance footage alone does not conclusively identify Robinson as the individual seen on campus. During cross-examination, they questioned investigators about the chaotic crime scene and suggested there was insufficient definitive proof linking the person captured on video to the defendant.
The courtroom itself was filled with emotion as Charlie Kirk's parents, Robert and Kathryn, sat alongside Erika and other family members throughout the hearing. Witnesses described the atmosphere as somber, with several attendees visibly struggling as audio and video evidence from the shooting was presented.
Investigators also revealed new details about the immediate aftermath of the shooting, including confusion caused by another man who falsely claimed responsibility, briefly diverting officers' attention before investigators allegedly traced the shooting to the rooftop location overlooking the event.
More testimony is expected in the coming days, including evidence from the officer who prosecutors say received Robinson's alleged confession shortly after the shooting. Additional forensic evidence could also be introduced as the high-profile preliminary hearing continues.
