As the August 12 total solar eclipse approaches, scientists are turning their attention to one of its strangest and least understood side effects - a phenomenon so elusive that, nearly 200 years after it was first documented, nobody can fully explain what causes it.
They're called shadow bands: thin, wavy lines of light and dark that ripple across the ground or the sides of buildings in the seconds just before and just after totality. Witnesses have described them as looking like racing water or "phantom serpents" gliding silently across pavement.
The leading theory points to turbulence high in Earth's atmosphere. As the Moon narrows the Sun down to a thin sliver of light, that remaining sliver acts almost like a flashlight beam passed through rippling air, scattering into faint bands on the ground below. But researchers admit the science still doesn't add up perfectly - some eclipses produce vivid, unmistakable bands, while others show barely a trace, and no one can yet predict which kind a given eclipse will bring.
Shadow bands are notoriously easy to miss. They last only seconds, and most eclipse-watchers are busy looking up at the sky through their solar glasses rather than down at the ground. The best chance to catch them is right before the Moon fully covers the Sun, when the light thins to a crescent - so it helps to have a friend watching a flat, light-colored surface like a sidewalk or bedsheet while you watch the sky.
For as much as science has learned about eclipses, this one detail still slips through our fingers - a small reminder, for many believers, that even after centuries of study, creation still holds mysteries only its Maker fully understands.
The eclipse reaches totality across the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain on Wednesday, August 12.
