Morgan Wallen just made Billboard history. His duet with Ella Langley, "I Can't Love You Anymore," rose from No. 2 to No. 1 on the Aug. 15-dated Country Airplay chart, making Wallen the first artist in the chart's 36-year history to lead in back-to-back weeks with two different songs as the credited lead act.
The song earned 33.4 million audience impressions between July 31 and Aug. 6, according to Luminate, and follows a two-week run at No. 1 for Wallen's "Don't We." It's Langley's fifth Country Airplay chart-topper and Wallen's 22nd - a milestone reached in the song's 15th week on the chart.
"I Can't Love You Anymore," written by Langley with Austin Goodloe and Joybeth Taylor, marks the first official studio collaboration between the two Southern-raised stars, who have spent much of the past year touring together. The song was added to the reissue of Langley's album Dandelion shortly after its April release.
Beyond the chart records, both artists have become known this year for speaking candidly about their Christian faith on some of country music's biggest stages. Wallen, the son of Southern Baptist pastor Tommy Wallen, has said he intentionally works biblical themes into his music: "Me as a Christian, I think anytime that I can throw a little hint of that in my music, I'm always all for it." Langley, who grew up singing in Southern Baptist churches in Alabama, has repeatedly paused her own concerts this year to tell fans that her career turnaround has been inseparable from her faith, crediting what she calls a renewed relationship with Christ.
With "I Can't Love You Anymore" now topping the airplay chart, expect the song's radio and streaming run to continue well into the fall.
