Carrie Underwood gave her home congregation another Sunday surprise on Aug. 9 - and this time, fans noticed something different about her, too.
The Grammy-winning country star made an unannounced appearance at Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee, joining the choir to perform Hillsong Worship's "What a Beautiful Name" and dueting with worship leader Jennifer Akers on "Great Is Thy Faithfulness." Congregants said the moment gave them goosebumps, and clips quickly spread across social media.
Underwood also debuted a lighter, blonde look, a shift from the darker hair she'd worn through much of her run as an "American Idol" judge. Fans online called the appearance "authentic" and "spiritually meaningful."
This wasn't a one-off. Underwood, who grew up singing in church in Checotah, Oklahoma, has become a familiar face at Rolling Hills over the years, surprising the congregation during Christmas, Easter, and ordinary Sundays alike. She released a full-length gospel album, "My Savior," in 2021 - featuring hymns like "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" - which won the Grammy for Best Roots Gospel Album.
The appearance comes as Underwood prepares for another milestone: her 14th consecutive season introducing NBC's "Sunday Night Football," returning Sept. 13. Between the football spotlight and the "American Idol" judge's chair, Underwood's church appearances remain a quieter, steadier reminder of where she says her voice truly comes from.
