Latest Box Office News: Tom Holland’s `Spider-Man' Is About To Steal `Star Wars’' Biggest Box-Office Crown

Tom Holland's friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man is apparently done playing nice.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now within striking distance of toppling Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing film in US box-office history. The Sony and Marvel Studios blockbuster is expected to finish the Labor Day weekend with an astonishing domestic total of approximately $921 million-leaving it less than $16 million away from The Force Awakens' seemingly untouchable $936.6 million record.

That means Hollywood could be only days away from witnessing one of its biggest box-office shake-ups ever.

The film is expected to collect roughly $21 million across the four-day holiday weekend, despite already being in its sixth weekend of release. Even more impressively, it recently became the fastest movie ever to cross $900 million domestically, reaching the milestone in just 36 days.

Industry insiders believe numbers this enormous could only happen if fans were returning to cinemas two or even three times. Tom Holland and Zendaya's latest Spidey adventure has clearly become more than another superhero sequel-it is now the must-see cinematic event audiences cannot stop revisiting.

The movie is currently screening in 3,520 theatres and still has access to premium large-format screens, helping it maintain its extraordinary momentum. Its projected three-day weekend haul of $16.7 million represents a decline of only 26 per cent from the previous frame-an unusually strong hold for a blockbuster this deep into its theatrical run.

While Spider-Man prepares to snatch the domestic crown from a galaxy far, far away, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is quietly chasing a colossal record of its own. The epic has reached approximately $1.59 billion worldwide and is now only about $80 million away from overtaking Jurassic World as Universal's highest-grossing movie globally.

Elsewhere, the once-shelved Coyote vs. Acme continues its surprise comeback, with its four-day holiday earnings projected between $12 million and $13 million. Disney and Pixar's 20th-anniversary rerelease of Cars is heading towards approximately $8 million, while Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's By Any Means is competing closely for fourth place.

But the weekend unmistakably belongs to Tom Holland. If Brand New Day maintains its current pace, Spider-Man may soon accomplish what once appeared impossible: sending The Force Awakens tumbling from the top of the domestic box-office throne.

The only question now is not whether Spidey will catch Star Wars-but how quickly he will swing past it.
