What to Expect at Emmys Night 2: The Races That Will Actually Decide the Show

The second night of the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards airs Sunday, September 6, from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles - and unlike Saturday's reality-and-variety-heavy show, this one belongs to scripted television.

Night two hands out trophies for guest acting, limited-series supporting performances, casting, cinematography, and directing and writing categories that were controversially shifted out of the main Primetime ceremony this year. Several of these awards double as strong previews for what will happen at the televised Emmys on September 14.

The categories to watch: Comedy Guest Actor features a genuine head-to-head between two television veterans, while Comedy Guest Actress could signal which way the entire comedy race is trending. In limited series, the Supporting Actress category is stacked - Linda Cardellini ("DTF St. Louis"), Dakota Fanning ("All Her Fault"), Laurie Metcalf ("Monster"), and Youn Yuh-jung ("Beef") are all in serious contention.

"The Pitt" and "Pluribus" are expected to dominate the technical drama categories, while "Beef" remains the frontrunner heading into the Limited Series race that will ultimately be decided at the main show. Also worth watching: a "Variety Special (Recorded)" showdown between the revived "Muppet Show" and a Taylor Swift concert special - a win for Kermit and friends could be the nudge Disney needs to order more episodes.

Night one and two will be edited into a single broadcast airing September 12 on FXX and streaming on Hulu.

Fittingly, several of this year's biggest contenders - including "Beef," a story built entirely around anger giving way to reckoning - are reminders that even Hollywood's biggest stage keeps returning to stories about forgiveness and being seen.
