Reports had alleged that the Heroes and Nashville star died after taking what she believed was an oxycodone tablet that was secretly laced with fentanyl. However, Panettiere's representative has branded the claim "unverified hearsay" and stressed that authorities have not yet established an official cause of death.
"As reported yesterday by the Greenville County Coroner's Office, Hayden's death remains under investigation pending the completion of toxicology results, despite reports from some outlets stating otherwise," the representative told Us Weekly.
The statement arrives amid increasingly lurid reports about Panettiere's final hours and the possibility that black-market drugs may have played a role. According to People, federal agents searched the actress's Los Angeles residence nine days after her death while investigating possible evidence of illegal narcotics.
Panettiere was reportedly found unresponsive at a rented property in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. Emergency personnel attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial findings reportedly revealed no trauma contributing to her death.
