‘Aladdin’ Star Mena Massoud Reveals What Could Decide The Future Of His ‘Daniel’ Films

Mena Massoud is ready to explore more of Daniel's biblical story, but turning that ambition into another movie will require more than enthusiasm. The Aladdin actor says the future of Daniel: The Fiery Furnace depends on audience support, financial performance and the filmmakers' responsibility to the people who backed the independent production.

"Creatively, we all want to make it," Massoud told The Christian Post. He identified the lions' den as one possible direction, while emphasizing that the team must assess the first film's results before committing to another installment. His comments suggest considerable interest in continuing the story, but they do not constitute a sequel announcement.

The film opened September 18 and earned more than $3.3 million domestically during its first weekend, against a reported $2 million production budget. It debuted at No. 6 across more than 1,500 theaters, giving the biblical drama an encouraging start. However, ticket grosses alone do not establish profitability, particularly when distribution and promotional expenses must also be considered.

Massoud's caution reflects the project's crowdfunding roots. He said supporters' financial contributions carry a responsibility that the filmmakers want to honor before moving ahead, making the discussion about a second film both a creative opportunity and a business decision.

Written and directed by Canadian brothers Matthew and Daniel Kooman, the first movie follows Daniel's rise within Babylon after exile from Jerusalem. Its furnace narrative centers on Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, whose refusal to worship Nebuchadnezzar's image puts their lives at risk. Elijah Alexander, familiar to The Chosen audiences as Atticus, portrays the Babylonian king, while Massoud stars as Daniel and also serves as a producer.

The role carries a personal connection for Massoud. Born in Egypt and raised in Canada, the actor has discussed how his Coptic Christian background helped him approach the biblical character. In a September appearance on the Lighthouse Faith podcast, he explored that relationship between his upbringing and his performance, bringing a faith dimension to a career widely associated with Disney's live-action Aladdin.

His involvement also extends beyond appearing on screen. In a premiere interview with GodTube, Massoud discussed the responsibility of portraying a beloved biblical figure and helping produce the adaptation. The conversation addressed why Daniel's early years matter for younger viewers and how the story's pressures connect with the challenge of maintaining personal convictions.

The filmmakers have described their own commitment in similarly personal terms. In an interview reported by CBN, the Kooman brothers said the production raised $1.2 million through crowdfunding and relied heavily on prayer and sustained engagement with Scripture. They presented the support as evidence that audiences wanted to participate in bringing biblical stories to theaters.

The project also draws on recognizable names in Christian music. Its official website lists Michael W. Smith as an executive producer and features music connected with the film, including "Walk Thru Fire" by Trevor McNevan and TobyMac. Alongside trailers and behind-the-scenes footage, those materials give audiences several ways to explore the production beyond the movie itself.

A continuation could move from the furnace story to another defining account of faith under royal pressure: Daniel's encounter with the lions' den. For viewers eager to see that chapter adapted, Massoud's comments offer a reason to watch the first film's progress closely. The creative interest is there; whether it becomes a financed production remains the unanswered question.
