Jason Romano Reveals Why He Is Leaving Sports Spectrum For A New Christian Ministry Role After Nearly A Decade

Jason Romano is leaving the sports ministry platform he helped build for a new assignment with Nations of Coaches. After nearly ten years at Sports Spectrum, the former ESPN producer says the move follows months of prayer and a growing conviction that God was directing him toward another opportunity. His new role begins October 15.

The announcement marks an emotional transition for a broadcaster who made conversations about sports and Christian faith a central part of his work. In an October 13 interview with ChurchLeaders, Romano described mixed feelings about leaving and emphasized his continuing support for Sports Spectrum. "It's bittersweet," he said, expressing gratitude for the organization and the years he spent there.

Romano's career already includes one significant change of direction. After 17 years at ESPN, he left in February 2017 to pursue sports ministry. His production experience included programs such as SportsCenter, NFL Live, Sunday NFL Countdown and Outside the Lines, giving him a substantial broadcasting background before he began creating interviews centered on faith.

The Sports Spectrum podcast launched on March 31, 2017. Romano recalled initially managing guest bookings, recording, editing and social media despite having no previous podcasting experience. Within nine months, the program had accumulated approximately 100,000 downloads, establishing an audience for athletes and coaches discussing their Christian convictions. His final Sports Spectrum episode, featuring former Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte, was released October 13.

That early project eventually became a much larger undertaking. Romano's official biography reports more than ten million podcast downloads since its launch and identifies his responsibilities as extending across Sports Spectrum's media channels, including its magazine and website. The departure therefore closes a chapter involving both public interviews and the production work supporting the organization's broader reach.

His next assignment keeps him within sports ministry while connecting him with a different audience. Nations of Coaches mentors and disciples college basketball coaches and places character coaches within basketball programs to offer spiritual support to coaches and players. Romano said discussions began earlier this year, although leaving Sports Spectrum had not originally been his plan.

Following prayer and conversations, he informed Sports Spectrum's leadership of his decision in late August. He also hopes to develop storytelling opportunities for Nations of Coaches, potentially including a podcast around next year's NCAA Final Four. Those possibilities remain aspirations rather than announced productions, but they suggest his interviewing experience could become part of the new assignment.

The transition connects two established parts of Romano's career: producing sports content and creating space for people to discuss faith. His biography also lists service on the board of Uncommon Sports Group, a ministry supporting future Christian leaders in college and professional sports. That involvement places the new position within an ongoing commitment to ministry throughout the sports industry.

For longtime listeners, the immediate change is the end of his regular Sports Spectrum hosting chapter. What follows will take shape through his work with coaches and the storytelling projects that develop from it. Romano's announcement presents the move as a considered response to a sense of calling, with gratitude for the platform he is leaving and anticipation for the relationships ahead.
