Pope Leo XIV had a good second night at Rome's Gemelli Hospital and got out of bed for breakfast, the Vatican said Thursday, two days after surgery for lung cancer.
"The Pope had a good night in the hospital, got up and had breakfast," the Holy See Press Office said. Matteo Bruni said Leo concelebrated Mass on Wednesday afternoon in a room prepared for that purpose on the hospital's 10th floor. Doctors said Wednesday that his tests and recovery were within the expected range.
The Vatican has not changed the expected hospital stay of about one week. His public schedule is canceled until Oct. 20.
The Vatican has not said how large the tumor was or whether the disease had spread to nearby lymph nodes. Those details are key to the outlook, and the pathology report may take several days. His doctors have so far given no indication that he will need further treatment.
Asked whether the trip would change, Bruni said the pope's intention to travel remains the same. The trip is planned for Nov. 6-17 in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
Polish Catholics in Rome plan to pray a rosary for the pope in St. Peter's Square on Oct. 16, the anniversary of John Paul II's election. Believers around the world continue to ask for his full recovery.
