Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy is "awake and alert" at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after suffering a stroke, and his office says doctors expect a full recovery.
Murphy, 53, began feeling numbness in his arm on Saturday, Oct. 31, while attending his son's hockey game, chief of staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement released Sunday. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors found he had suffered a stroke. He was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.
Herwitt said Murphy is responding well to treatment and that his team is optimistic about a full recovery. No details have been released on the type of stroke or when he may leave the hospital.
Murphy has served in the U.S. Senate since 2013, after three years in the House of Representatives.
Messages of prayer and support have followed. Connecticut lawmaker Ryan Fazio said he is keeping Murphy and his family in his prayers. Sen. John Fetterman, who survived a stroke in 2022, wished Murphy a full and speedy recovery.
Murphy's case is a reminder of the warning signs. Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side, along with trouble speaking, vision changes or loss of balance, calls for an immediate 911 call. Fast treatment can reduce the risk of lasting damage.
