Irish Olympian and European 1500m champion Ciara Mageean has died at 34 after a battle with cancer, her family announced Sunday, Nov. 1.
A statement on her Instagram account said she died at 6:30 a.m., surrounded by her loved ones. Mageean, from Portaferry, County Down, revealed in 2025 that she had been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer. Her death comes just weeks after she married her long-term partner in Belfast, according to Al Jazeera.
Before the 2024 Paris Olympics, her parish told The Irish Catholic she was a "natural evangeliser" who was not ashamed to talk about her Catholic faith. The paper also presented her as a role model for young people. When schoolchildren asked about her favorite medal, she reportedly took out the Miraculous Medal she wore around her neck and called it her most important one.
A two-time Olympian for Ireland at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, Mageean made history in June 2024 by winning European 1500m gold in Rome. She was the first individual Irish European champion since Sonia O'Sullivan, and she held Irish records in the 800m, 1000m, 1500m and mile.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio this year, she said she wanted to "fit as much living into the years I have left." Athletics Ireland said she will be remembered for her courage, kindness and incredible spirit, and Ireland's Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was deeply saddened by her passing.
Health officials urge anyone with persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool or unexplained weight loss to see a doctor.
JubileeCast extends prayers and condolences to Mageean's family, friends and the people of Portaferry.
