Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan has been hospitalised following a medical emergency, forcing the legendary rock band to postpone two German concerts and leaving his return to the stage uncertain. The 81-year-old singer's condition has not been publicly detailed.
The band announced on October 31 that it could no longer perform that evening at Leipzig's QI Arena or on November 1 at Hamburg's Sporthalle.
"This comes as a result of a medical emergency involving Ian Gillan, which has resulted in his current hospitalisation," the group said in its official announcement.
The statement confirmed the immediate disruption but offered no diagnosis, explanation of the emergency or timetable for recovery. That leaves the central question unanswered: when will Gillan be well enough to perform again?
Deep Purple acknowledged the short notice and fans' disappointment, saying its team was working to arrange replacement dates. Previously purchased tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled performances.
Attention now turns to the remaining itinerary. The band's official tour page still lists a November 3 appearance at Dortmund's Westfalenhalle, followed by Berlin's Uber Arena on November 4. Those listings, however, do not establish that Gillan has recovered or received medical clearance to return.
The interruption comes during another active chapter for Deep Purple. The group released SPLAT!, its 24th studio album, in July, continuing to add new material to a catalogue that has sustained generations of listeners.
Gillan's history with the band stretches back to 1969. Following departures and reunions, he has fronted Deep Purple continuously since rejoining in 1992. His place in the group's history was recognised when he and his bandmates were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
For now, the announcement establishes two postponed concerts and a hospitalisation. A confirmed recovery update will be the clearest indication of what comes next for the singer and the tour.
Fans can follow announcements through Deep Purple's official news page and check the tour schedule for changes.
