Funeral arrangements have been confirmed for Irish Olympian Ciara Mageean, who died Sunday, Nov. 1, at 34 following a diagnosis of bowel cancer last year.
Her funeral will take place at St Patrick's Church in Ballyphilip, County Down, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. That is 9 a.m. Eastern Time. The funeral will leave the family home at 1:45 p.m. for the requiem Mass.
Mageean will repose at her parents' home on Ballyphilip Road in Portaferry on Monday, with callers welcome from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. local time.
Her family has asked for family flowers only, with donations, if desired, to Bowel Cancer Ireland and Marie Curie. The funeral notice says she died peacefully at Marie Curie Hospice and describes her as the beloved wife of Thomas. She married Thomas Moran in Belfast in October, just weeks before her death.
Irish President Catherine Connolly praised her as an athlete who stood out from her junior years through to becoming European champion two years ago. The President also said Mageean had been an inspiration to many people facing their own struggles since she shared news of her illness.
Mageean, a two-time Olympian and 2024 European 1500m champion, has been remembered not only for her records but also for her openness about her Catholic faith. Before the 2024 Paris Olympics, her parish told The Irish Catholic she was a "natural evangeliser," and she once called the Miraculous Medal she wore her most important one.
For an athlete who spoke so freely about her faith, her community will say goodbye in a requiem Mass.
JubileeCast keeps Mageean's husband, family, friends and community in prayer.
