Previously, purchasing goods and services via Twitter was possible but this involved users sending public messages with a special hash tag in them to justify acquisition of an item. On clicking the button, users will be elicited to enter payment and shipping info. If a user is authenticated and registered with a service or seller, they will be requested to click the button once more to ascertain purchase.

In a blog post, Twitter reported that a number of users among them pop singer Rihanna, Keith Urban , Pharrell , Eminem, Wiz Khalifa, Demi Lovato,  non-profit group Nature Conservancy and fashion brand Burberry had signed up for the experiments. Twitter's e-commerce boss, Nathan Hubbard, in an interview with the New York Times said that the first items to be sold via the button will be time-limited such as event tickets. According to CNBC physical goods like clothes and accessories will also trade for now with room for accommodating music and downloads in the near future.
