A Monster Calls Movie Release Date, Reveals, Review and Plot Updates: Liam Neeson to Play the Role of Unlikely Good Guy

If there ever was a movie that needed a lavender ribbon attached to it, it would be A Monster Calls. The movie is based on a book of the same name conceived by Sioban Dowd but written by Patrick Ness. The children's fantasy novel was published on 5th May 2011 and won the Carnegie and Greenway medals for writing and illustration this was the first time the same book had won both awards. On March 5th of 2014 Focus Features bought the rights to the book for an impressive 20 million dollars. Going by the amount of money spent on the rights and the number of awards the book has won, even before we tell you the plot, I'm sure you know that we have a winner on our hands.

The movie is about a boy whose mother is in the terminal stages of cancer, add to that a strained relationship with his grandmother and a bully at school and it's a wonder he ever gets out of bed in the morning. Every night he is plagued by the same nightmare that wakes him up at 12:07 A.M every night.  A monster that looks like a man fashioned out of a tree begins to visit him every night and exchanges three stories for the story of his nightmare. The monster turns out to be helping the boy with his problems including possessing him to stand up to his bully. When he finally tells his story we find out that he is just having a hard time dealing with his mother's imminent death.

Siobhan Dowd came up with the concept for the story when she herself was in the last stages of cancer. While she was still in discussions with her publisher she passed away and the book was passed to Patrick Ness. Ness admitted that he had problems writing the book while staying true to the original author. The movie is to be directed by Juan Antonia Bayona. Liam Neeson is to play the monster while Felicity Jones is to play the boy's mother. Sigournery Weaver and Toby Kebbell are also on the cast list. The movie is set to be in theatres on October 14th of 2016.
