Taylor Swift & Dixie Chicks Team for Heartfelt Song ‘Soon You’ll Get Better’
Taylor Swift releases her seventh album Lover today. One of the highlights from the new album is the heart wrenching ballad "Soon You'll Get Better." This song finds a vulnerable Swift singing about the turmoil of watching a loved one becoming ill. The song, which Swift co-produced and cowrote with Jack Antonoff, speaks of our mortality, our need for spiritual as well as physical strengths, and our need for companionship in times of trials.
Country music super trio Dixie Chicks provide harmonies on the song's insistent chorus, and during the bridge, when Swift asks in desperation, "Who am I s'posed to talk to?/What am I s'posed to do?/If there's no you," Natalie Maines' voice echoes her own.
It's not hard to draw connections between the song and Swift's personal life, considering she has been open about her mother Andrea's cancer battle since 2015 when she first shared the news with her fans. Both of Swift's parents have previously been diagnosed with cancer, with Swift telling Elle magazine earlier this year that her mom's illness recently returned.
"Soon You'll Get Better" Lyrics:
The buttons of my coat were tangled in my hair / In doctor's office lighting, I didn't tell you I was scared / That was the first time we were there / Holy orange bottles, each night I pray to you / Desperate people find faith, so now I pray to Jesus too / And I say to you
Chorus:
Ooh-ah / Soon you'll get better / Ooh-ah / Soon you'll get better / Ooh-ah / You'll get better soon / 'Cause you have to
I know delusion when I see it in the mirror / You like the nicer nurses, you make the best of a bad deal / I just pretend it isn't real / I'll paint the kitchen neon / I'll brighten up the sky / I know I'll never get it / There's not a day that I won't try / And I say to you
Repeat Chorus
And I hate to make this all about me / But who am I supposed to talk to? / What am I supposed to do / If there's no you?
This won't go back to normal / If it ever was / It's been years of hoping / And I keep saying it because / 'Cause I have to
Repeat Chorus Twice
