Sony and Affirm's OVERCOMER opened this weekend strong at the Box office. Despite stiff competition from big movies such as Angel Has Fallen and Hobbs & Shaw, the faith-based movie managed to open at #3 bringing in an income of $8.2 million.
OVERCOMER is a sports-based movie with Christian themes directed by the Kendrick Brothers. Not only did the film do well at the box office, it also earned a rare A+ CinemaScore. At a production cost of only $5 million, Overcomer has already cleared the bar for production with its first weekend in theaters.
Written and directed by and starring Alex Kendrick, the faith-based movie is about a high school coach whose faith becomes tested as he mentors a troubled teen. Audiences approved with an A+ CinemaScore but critics responded with a 33% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
OVERCOMER is the sixth movie from the Kendrick Brothers, and their first film since the No. 1 box-office hit, WAR ROOM, which earned more than $67 million at the box office. The WAR ROOM soundtrack also sold more than 60,000 copies.
