Author Tilly Dillehay Cautions Us Not to Fill Our Spiritual Hunger with Food and Fear

Tilly Dillehay

Tilly Dillehay, a Christian Book Award winner, addresses the burden food has in people's lives and offers advice on how to approach food in her new book Broken Bread: Feasting in an Age of Fussiness (June 2020, Harvest House Publishers).

Dillehay identifies the four approaches to food  as asceticism, gluttony, snobbery and apathy. These food categories are the various attempts to use physical food to satiate spiritual hunger. Broken Bread is Dillehay's story of the freedom, growth and joy that she has found by drawing nearer to God and no longer letting food be an idol in her life.

"God cares about how we eat," writes Dillehay. "He cares much more about how we eat than he cares about what we eat. Let that sink in for a moment. If you have been treating food like a burden to be carried for the family or a rule book to be followed or a club with which to beat yourself, this sounds counterintuitive."

In Broken Bread, readers will learn to use food as God intended - to build community, faith and love. Dillehay uses Jesus' ministry of sharing meals with others and giving people free meals as an example of the great opportunity you have to connect with people around the table. She encourages readers to spend more time feeding others and offering up a seat at their table in order to share the joy of Christ with them.

"We have a great opportunity to model freedom and generosity," writes Dillehay. "We have a great opportunity to bring the joy of Christ into our kitchens, as we are bringing him into our bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms, libraries, front yards, backyards, and neighborhoods."
