Tommy DeCarlo, the singer who rose from devoted fan to longtime frontman of the legendary rock band Boston, has died at the age of 60 following a battle with brain cancer.

DeCarlo's family confirmed the news Monday through a statement shared on his social media accounts. "He fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end," the message read, asking fans to respect the family's privacy during their time of grief.

DeCarlo became Boston's lead vocalist in 2007 after the death of original singer Brad Delp. At the time, DeCarlo was working as a credit manager at a Home Depot in North Carolina when his life unexpectedly changed. A lifelong Boston fan, he recorded several covers of the band's songs and posted them online, along with a tribute song honoring Delp.

Boston founder Tom Scholz eventually heard the recordings and was stunned by how closely DeCarlo's voice resembled Delp's. The discovery led to an invitation to perform at a tribute concert, which soon turned into a role as the band's touring lead singer.

Scholz later reflected on DeCarlo's impact, saying the singer "appeared out of nowhere to rescue Boston" during a difficult time for the group. DeCarlo went on to perform with the band for nearly two decades and appeared on the 2013 Boston album "Life, Love and Hope."

Beyond his work with Boston, DeCarlo also launched a band with his son called Decarlo, releasing two albums in recent years.

While many fans remember DeCarlo for his powerful performances of classic hits like "More Than a Feeling" and "Don't Look Back," those close to him also remember a devoted father and humble musician who never forgot his roots as a fan.

For many, DeCarlo's journey-from admirer to lead singer of one of rock's most iconic bands-remains a reminder of how unexpected opportunities can shape a life. In moments of loss like this, many believers are reminded of the hope found in faith and the promise that a life well lived continues to inspire others.

DeCarlo is survived by his children Annie, Talia and Tommy Jr. Fans around the world continue to share tributes celebrating the voice and legacy he leaves behind.
