Before the gunshot. Before the 2 a.m. police call. Before the arrest and the $1 million bond - there was a Facebook post.
In February 2022, Pastor Tammy McCollum marked her 30th wedding anniversary with words that now carry unbearable weight. "30 YEARS Y'ALL!!! I am truly blessed and honored to have been married to this amazing man of God for 30 years, and I'm looking forward to the next 100 years together!" she wrote publicly. "I love this man with all that is within me! Thank you, Jesus, for allowing me to get it right the 1st time!"
Four years later, her husband Eddie McCollum, 61, is charged with her first-degree murder.
According to court records cited by WBTV, Eddie McCollum called 911 himself and admitted to fatally shooting his wife during an argument before requesting an attorney. The argument's subject has not been disclosed. He appeared in court Tuesday, was appointed a public defender, and bond was set at $1 million. He worked as a teaching assistant for exceptional children at Southwest Middle School in Charlotte, where he has since been suspended with pay pending the investigation.
Their daughter, Davilyn McCollum, is struggling to make sense of what happened. "I feel like everybody is in such a state of confusion because my father loved my mother dearly," she told WCNC. "Their relationship wasn't arguments all day every day over the small things. We're talking about people who have been together for 30 years of their lives."
Through tears, she also remembered who her mother was beyond the tragedy. "Job well done, my girl," Davilyn said. "You did a good job."
The Well Worship Center in Statesville, where Tammy served as a minister, broke its silence Tuesday night with a statement on Facebook, quoting Matthew 5:4 - "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted" - and asking the community to pray for the family and respect their privacy during this time.
The details of this story are painful in a particular way - not just because of the violence, but because of how ordinary and full of faith everything looked from the outside. Thirty years of marriage. A public declaration of love. A life of ministry. And a morning that changed everything.
There are no easy answers here. Only the reminder that even within communities of deep faith, darkness can exist in places no one expects - and that those who are left behind, like Davilyn and the congregation at The Well, deserve every prayer they can get.
