Eight years ago, Jonathan Roumie says he was completely broken - out of food, financially exhausted, and ready to surrender both his acting career and his future to God. Today, the actor best known for portraying Jesus in the global phenomenon The Chosen is looking back on what he calls the turning point that changed everything.
In a deeply personal Facebook reel shared this week, Roumie reflected on the spiritual surrender that came shortly before he was cast in the role that would transform his life and career.
"Eight years ago today, God changed the course of my life," Roumie shared. "The road ahead seemed impassable and impossible but He had other plans. And I couldn't be more grateful."
The emotional video traces Roumie's journey from desperation to worldwide recognition, showing how the actor went from struggling to afford basic necessities to becoming the face of one of the most influential faith-based series in modern television.
According to Roumie, the breakthrough did not begin with success - it began with surrender.
"Three months before I booked the role of the show, I went through a deeper spiritual conversion," he explained in the reel. "And a few months before that, I had made some other decisions about living my life differently."
The actor has previously spoken openly about the difficult season leading up to his casting. During a 2024 appearance on The View, Roumie revealed he had reached a point of total financial collapse.
"I was broke," he said. "I was out of food. I was out of even government assistance for food."
At what he described as the lowest point of his life, Roumie said he realized there was only one thing left to do.
"[I had to] get on my knees and surrender my entire life and my career and everything that I had up to that point over to God," he recalled. "Because there wasn't anything, I realized, I could do on my own."
Part of Roumie's new Facebook reel also references what he describes as a miraculous financial provision that arrived during that difficult season - a moment explored further in the docuseries Jonathan & Jesus.
Meanwhile, production continues on the seventh and final season of The Chosen. Season 6 is scheduled to premiere on November 15, with the finale expected to receive a theatrical release in spring 2027.
Roumie's testimony has resonated strongly with many Christian viewers not simply because of his success, but because of the honesty with which he speaks about failure, surrender, and faith in seasons where nothing appears to be working.
