Before Joshua Henry walked onto the Radio City Music Hall stage Sunday night to accept his first Tony Award, he had already done what he does every morning - spoken a mantra over his family: Peace is here. God's presence is here. Harmony is here.

Fifteen years on Broadway. Four nominations. And on June 7, finally, a win.

Henry took home the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his portrayal of Coalhouse Walker Jr. in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Ragtime. His previous nominations came for The Scottsboro Boys in 2011, Violet in 2014, and Carousel in 2018.

The speech was rousing and grateful - Henry thanked God, his wife, and his twin sons before dedicating the award to his very first voice teacher, Birgit Fioravante, who gave him free lessons when he was just starting out. "She's here today," he said. "She gave me free voice lessons and told me I could do this when I didn't even know what she was talking about. I love you so much."

He then called out the stars of the original Ragtime production: "Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell, thank you for your black-don't-crack legacy of artistic brilliance, showing us that we can shine in the fullness of who we are. It is an honor to play this role - a Black musician whose art led him to his love and to his dream. And even in the face of pain and tragedy, he found a way to be heard. Every artist in this room, every artist at home - fight, fight, fight to be heard."

Backstage, he opened up about a road marked by heartbreak as much as hope. "I've auditioned for so many things that broke my heart, and I've been involved with so many different projects that just didn't pan out," he said. "There's a place for me - and that's what I want my boys to know, what I want everyone to know. What is for you cannot pass you by."

In a Playbill interview ahead of the ceremony, Henry had already revealed the spiritual rhythm behind his performance: "A mantra I do with my family every morning - peace is here, God's presence is here, harmony is here. That helps me backstage right before I put on the heaviness of Coalhouse."

That is what faithfulness looks like on a stage. Not a shortcut. Not an overnight moment. A man who kept showing up, kept giving God the room, kept speaking peace over himself and his family - until the night the room finally agreed.

Ragtime took home four Tony Awards at the 79th Annual Tony Awards, which aired live on CBS and Paramount+ from New York.
