The 2026 BET Awards ended the way it began - with Lauryn Hill at the center of everything.

On Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Hill became the inaugural recipient of the Living Legend Icon Award, a new honor created by BET specifically to recognize her 35-year career. According to BET, the award celebrates "the pioneers who mastered their craft and never let go of the culture."

The tribute that preceded the award was one for the books. Doechii and SZA covered "Ready or Not"; Tems and Tierra Whack performed "Fu-Gee-La"; Doja Cat came out for "Superstar"; Nas delivered "If I Ruled the World"; Lizzo covered "Doo Wop (That Thing)"; and Queen Latifah and Common closed the tribute with "Lost Ones."

Then came the moment no one expected: Hill took the stage to perform "Ex-Factor," telling the audience she wasn't supposed to perform but heard that someone had bowed out of the tribute.

The family element made it even more powerful. Hill's daughter Selah Marley performed the title track from her mother's solo project, her son YG Marley performed "Turn Your Lights Down Low," and Zion Marley did a rendition of the song named after him.

In her acceptance speech, Hill was direct and deeply personal. "I have always cared about the expression and the representation of the dignity of our people," she said. "I fight for y'all. Everybody might not know about it, but I fight for y'all."

Hill closed the evening with a performance of "Everything Is Everything." For those who've followed her since Sister Act 2 - where a young Hill sang "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" and signaled something holy was coming - Sunday night felt like a full-circle moment: an artist whose gift has always carried a spiritual weight, finally receiving the recognition that was long overdue.
