Erika Kirk, widow of Charlie Kirk and CEO of Turning Point USA, is speaking out after a New York Times newsletter piece characterized her views on marriage and family as out of step with how most Americans want to live.

The op-ed, written by Jessica Grose, referenced comments Kirk made during her commencement address at Hillsdale College in May, where she encouraged graduates to "marry young, not rushed, but young." Grose argued the message reflected an outdated model of family life.

Kirk responded directly on X, saying the piece missed the deeper point behind her message. "This op-ed completely misses the point on the purpose of marriage and children and completely misrepresents my views in the process," she wrote. "The entire article is laced with viewing family through the lens of money and career as if those things bring fulfillment and purpose."

She went further, rooting her perspective explicitly in her faith: "We serve a God of order and when you live a life ordered there's a double portion of grace. Meaning marriage first, then kids, and everything else," Kirk wrote. "Timing matters because life is shorter than you might think, and you never know what could happen."

Kirk, who married Charlie in 2021, said she didn't view their timing as too early or too late, but wished they'd met sooner. She added that having children isn't about financial readiness alone: "You don't need a mansion in order to build a family."

For Kirk, marriage and children remain matters of eternal significance, not economic calculation. "The material goods and fortune of this world mean nothing when we go to our eternal resting place," she wrote.
