Happy 250th Birthday, America: What Two and a Half Centuries of Freedom Still Owes to Faith

Today, the United States turns 250 years old. Two and a half centuries after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Americans are marking the milestone with fireworks, concerts, and gatherings from coast to coast - but for many in the Christian community, today carries a deeper weight than celebration alone.

The nation's founding documents describe rights as "endowed by their Creator," a phrase that has shaped American identity since 1776. That conviction - that freedom is a gift, not merely a political achievement - has been a recurring theme throughout this year's 250th anniversary events, from the Rededicate 250 prayer gathering on the National Mall in May to Franklin Graham's 50-day "One Nation Under God" prayer initiative, which drew a different pastor from each state to lead prayer daily and culminates today, Independence Day itself.

As the country reflects on where it has been, some are also looking ahead. Historians and cultural commentators have spent this milestone week considering what the next 250 years might hold for the nation. But for many believers, the more pressing question isn't what America will become - it's what each generation chooses to remember and pass forward.

The Book of Psalms puts it simply: every generation is called to tell the next what God has done. On a day defined by parades and fireworks, that charge remains quietly present beneath the celebration - a reminder that gratitude, not just pride, is at the heart of the holiday.

Happy 250th birthday, America.
