Cory Asbury has released a new recording of Rich Mullins' "The Love of God," featuring longtime Mullins collaborator Jimmy Abegg, as part of a new volume of the Bellsburg Sessions project. The series brings together a rotating lineup of artists to reinterpret songs from Mullins' catalog, recorded at his historic former home in Bellsburg, Tennessee.
"The Love of God" originally appeared on Mullins' posthumously released Songs 2 collection following his death in a car accident in 1997. The song, built around the line "the reckless, raging fury that they call the love of God," later helped inspire the title of Asbury's own breakout hit, "Reckless Love."
Abegg's presence on the track carries particular significance within the Mullins community. He was among the close friends gathered just days after Mullins' death who first read aloud the lyrics to the last songs Mullins had written, an account documented in interviews around the original Bellsburg Sessions project. This new volume, distributed through Old Bear Records, features a wide lineup of artists connected to Mullins' legacy, including David Mullins, Andrew Peterson, and Brandon Heath, continuing a tradition of honoring the songwriter widely credited as an influence on generations of Christian artists.
"The Love of God" featuring Cory Asbury and Jimmy Abegg is available now wherever listeners stream music.
