Taylor Swift says the country roots that launched her career two decades ago mean more to her now than ever - and she's tracing it all back to a dream she had at age 10.
In a rare, career-spanning conversation with Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., recorded August 18 at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles and released this week as part of the Academy's "Icon Sessions" series, Swift opened up about the exact moment her love for songwriting began.
"I was about 10 when I started obsessively thinking about and planning how it would be possible for me to make music for the rest of my life," Swift told Mason. She recalled learning that country star Faith Hill had been discovered at Nashville's famed Bluebird Cafe - and making it "a personal life goal" to perform there herself. That pursuit led her to pick up instruments and start writing her own songs, studying the structure of the music she loved most.
Looking back on "Tim McGraw," the song that introduced her to the world at 16, Swift said the instinct for detailed, character-driven storytelling that now defines her catalog was already there. "I love my country roots more and more the further along this path I get, and I want to honor them more and more," she said. "I feel more tied to them, more loyal to them... The people that shaped who I am as an artist and as a writer, that all happened in Nashville."
The session closed with a surprise: Swift sat at a piano she's carried across the world since the Eras Tour and performed an unannounced mashup weaving together three songs connected by a common thread - memory, and the significance of reliving it.
For an artist who has moved through pop, folk, and everything between, it's a reminder that staying grounded in where you started is its own quiet act of gratitude - a value the Christian music community holds just as dear.
