Kate Hudson Reveals Why She Still Has Not Married Danny Fujikawa Five Years After Their Engagement

Kate Hudson has been wearing an engagement ring for five years-but planning an actual wedding to Danny Fujikawa appears to be another matter entirely.

During the September 8 episode of her Sibling Revelry podcast with brother Oliver Hudson, the actress admitted that the expense, enormous guest list and general headache of organizing the celebration are making marriage considerably less appealing.

"That's part of why I don't want to get married," Hudson confessed while discussing wedding costs. Her dream reception menu certainly would not keep a celebrity caterer busy: "Chips and salsa. That's all you get."

The problem is not a lack of love. Hudson and Fujikawa began dating in 2016, became engaged in September 2021 and share 7-year-old daughter Rani Rose. Instead, the bride-to-be seemingly cannot work out how to give her fiancé the intimate wedding he wants without cutting dozens of relatives from the invitation list.

According to Hudson, their family alone would account for roughly 50 guests. Once friends and other loved ones enter the equation, that supposedly "small" wedding could quickly turn into a sprawling Hollywood affair-and an eye-watering bill.

The How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star has considered several possibilities, including a destination wedding and a traditional Japanese ceremony honoring Fujikawa's heritage. However, none of those ideas has yet persuaded the couple to set a date.

Hudson was previously married to Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, with whom she shares son Ryder. She also has son Bingham from her former relationship with Muse singer Matt Bellamy. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she now appears less enchanted by the paperwork and expectations surrounding marriage than by the relationship itself.

In 2025, Hudson admitted that she might remain "engaged forever," telling Drew Barrymore that she likes her freedom and finds the contractual side of marriage difficult. She also has a famous example close to home: her mother, Goldie Hawn, and Kurt Russell have built one of Hollywood's most enduring relationships without ever walking down the aisle.

For now, Hudson and Fujikawa seem happy together-even if the wedding planner remains unemployed. An elopement could still happen, but anyone hoping for a lavish celebrity reception may need to lower their expectations. If Kate gets her way, guests might receive little more than a handful of tortilla chips, a bowl of salsa and a front-row seat to one of Hollywood's longest engagements.
