John MacArthur’s Successor Nathan Busenitz Receives A Sobering Charge As Grace Community Church Begins A New Chapter

Nathan Busenitz has officially taken the pulpit once occupied by John MacArthur-and his installation came with a pointed reminder about the responsibility that now rests on his shoulders. During Sunday worship on October 11, Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, installed its new pastor-teacher, marking a significant milestone following MacArthur's death in July 2025 at age 86.

For Busenitz, the appointment brings decades of personal history into a new and demanding role. Raised in the congregation and trained within its associated educational institutions, he now leads the church where he first encountered the preaching ministry that helped shape his own calling.

The church's elders unanimously affirmed Busenitz as pastor-teacher on August 20, 2026. His formal installation followed years of ministry within the congregation, including co-pastoring its Cornerstone Fellowship and serving as interim pastor before his appointment.

According to ChurchLeaders' account of the installation, the elders gathered around Busenitz and laid their hands on him as elder board chairman Chris Hamilton prayed for courage and faithfulness in his preaching. The moment publicly placed the congregation's support behind its new leader while acknowledging the seriousness of the task ahead.

Scottish theologian Sinclair Ferguson addressed that responsibility through a sermon on 2 Timothy 3:10-4:5. Drawing on Paul's charge to Timothy, Ferguson emphasized the demands of pastoral ministry through changing circumstances, telling the congregation that Busenitz has "a very sobering and challenging calling."

The message gave the occasion a searching focus: how does a pastor carry forward an established ministry while faithfully taking responsibility for the people now entrusted to him? Ferguson's emphasis on preaching Scripture placed the answer in the daily work of ministry, rather than the prominence of the position.

Busenitz brings substantial teaching and pastoral experience to that work. He began teaching at The Master's University in 2000, served on Grace Community Church's full-time pastoral staff from 2003 to 2009, and began teaching historical theology at The Master's Seminary in 2008. In 2021, he was appointed the seminary's executive vice president.

His family's connection to the church and seminary runs deep. His father, Irv Busenitz, was an original faculty member at The Master's Seminary and helped shape his son's understanding of expositional ministry alongside MacArthur. Nathan's books include Living a Life of Hope, Reasons We Believe, and Long Before Luther.

That background gives the succession a distinctly personal dimension. Busenitz has spent years teaching, counseling, and discipling members of the same congregation he now leads, bringing familiarity with its people as well as its theological commitments.

ChurchLeaders also reported Busenitz's gratitude for the welcome extended to him and his family. In a video recap, he described the congregation's kindness as overwhelming, directing his thanks toward the glory of Christ. Busenitz and his wife, Beth, have four adult children and two granddaughters.

The installation establishes a new chapter for Grace Community Church, but the charge delivered that morning reaches beyond a single succession. For Busenitz, the next stage will unfold through sermons, pastoral conversations, and the steady responsibility of shepherding a congregation whose history he knows firsthand.
