Billy Joel has shared a sobering update about the restrictions affecting his life following his normal pressure hydrocephalus diagnosis. The 77-year-old music legend says he cannot currently drive or perform, and further neurological testing will determine whether he can return to the stage.

"I can't drive right now. I'm not allowed to drive," Joel told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published October 15. He also described his neurologist's warning that performing could place considerable strain on him, comparing the experience of each show to a concussion.

For an artist whose career has revolved around live audiences, the uncertainty is significant. Joel explained that concert volume, lighting, stress and the energy required onstage all contribute to the demands of performing. He still wants to play again, but doctors have advised him to remain offstage while they assess whether a return is possible.

Despite those limitations, Joel offered reassurance about his overall condition. He described himself as doing well and identified balance as his main difficulty. His diagnosis became public in 2025, prompting the cancellation of his scheduled concerts; he has since disclosed undergoing surgery to have a shunt implanted.

The changes extend to another longtime passion: motorcycles. Joel explained that age and his condition have led him to reconsider keeping so many bikes, especially when he can no longer ride as he once did. For him, their appeal always included the freedom of actually taking them out on the road.

More than 70 motorcycles from his collection will go under the hammer at Gooding Christie's Rétromobile New York auctions on November 20-21 at the Javits Center. All will be offered without reserve, with proceeds intended to support The Joel Foundation. Among the highlights is a custom 1978 Triumph Bonneville presented to him to commemorate his 150th sold-out Madison Square Garden show.

For now, Joel has provided no confirmed comeback date. His desire to return remains, while further testing will help determine his next step.
