Laika's stop-motion film Wildwood earned an estimated $9 million in its second weekend at the domestic box office, down just 27% from its debut. Its second Sunday actually beat its opening Sunday by 2%.
The film did this on a quiet Halloween weekend. It finished third after adding 150 screens, for a total of 3,100 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. Laika's marketing chief David Burke called the hold an encouraging sign of the film's staying power and audience response.
Did Wildwood flop?
It's too early to say. The film opened in third place with roughly $12.3 million, which The Numbers lists as the second-lowest opening among Laika's films. Fortune also reports Laika spent a reported $100 million on it, so it will need strong word of mouth to keep climbing. Audience scores are strong, with an 8.7 on IMDb and an 87 critic score on Metacritic.
