Months before Tennessee tried to execute Christa Pike, her lawyers warned that a condition they linked to a rare blood cancer could leave her feeling as though she were suffocating during lethal injection. Pike survived two doses of the state's execution drug on September 30 and spent days on a ventilator. A January court filing obtained by People details the risks her attorneys raised before she entered the death chamber.
Pike's attorneys said she had thrombocytosis, a condition marked by an unusually high platelet count, which they said was likely due to a type of blood cancer known as a myeloproliferative disorder. They argued that her condition could make her more susceptible to severe pulmonary edema, a buildup of fluid in the lungs, during lethal injection. In their filing, they warned that severe cases could produce a sensation of drowning.
The lawyers raised a separate concern about Pike's veins. She had a history of difficult blood draws, they said, and prison medical staff used a small butterfly needle to draw her blood. On the night of the execution, staff reportedly struggled to establish IV access. Her attorneys say some of the pentobarbital may have pooled in her arms instead of reaching her bloodstream as intended. Whether the suspected cancer played any role in the failed execution remains unclear.
Pike returned to prison after 10 days in hospital. In her first public statement since the execution attempt, released October 30, she described burns and blisters on her arms and said she still struggled to speak. "My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts," she said. Her lawyers have asked a federal judge to end her isolation in the prison infirmary.
Pike remains under a death sentence for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a former classmate. Her attorneys are seeking to have the sentence commuted to life in prison. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent review of the failed execution and halted the state's remaining scheduled executions for 2026.
