Christian rapper Hulvey shared a message from a parent who believes a pink "Rich Like This" T-shirt bought at his Philadelphia show helped save their 11-year-old son's life after a bicycle crash.
"I think your t-shirt saved my son's life," the parent wrote in a message Hulvey posted on Instagram. The boy was wearing the shirt when he crashed into a rusty metal mailbox. A piece of metal pierced him under the arm, and the parent said doctors told the family that the injury had come within a "hair's width" of a major artery.
What caught the family's attention was the condition of the shirt. The metal had penetrated about an inch, according to the parent, but the fabric had neither ripped nor torn. The family believes the fabric stayed between the metal and the boy's skin and that its thickness may have kept the metal from going farther. The Instagram post gives the family's account of the injury and their own explanation for the narrow escape.
Hulvey responded by pointing to an ordinary decision that comes with selling concert merchandise. Thinner shirts are often recommended as a way to save money, he wrote. The message made him think about what a detail like the weight of a shirt could mean to someone who took it home.
"God can really use a t shirt to save someone's life," Hulvey wrote.
The parent called the boy's survival a miracle. After recounting the crash and what doctors had told the family, the parent ended the message with a word of encouragement for the artist, urging him to "keep spreading the good news and bringing light into the world."
