Augustus Montague Toplady, the Anglican clergyman who wrote "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me," was born on November 4, 1740, in Farnham, Surrey, England. He grew up largely in the care of his mother after his father, a British army officer, died while Toplady was an infant. As a teenager in Ireland, Toplady experienced a religious awakening at a service held in a barn, where a lay preacher spoke on Ephesians 2:13 and its promise that those once far off had been brought near through the blood of Christ.
Toplady went on to serve in the Church of England, becoming vicar of Broadhembury in Devon in 1768. He was also an outspoken defender of Calvinism. In The Historic Proof of the Doctrinal Calvinism of the Church of England, published in 1774, he argued that Calvinist teaching had roots in the Anglican tradition. His preaching reached audiences beyond his parish through the Countess of Huntingdon, who invited him to preach in her chapels in London, Brighton, and Bath. In 1776 he began preaching regularly at a French Reformed church in London. His health declined, and he died in 1778 at the age of 37.
"Rock of Ages" grew out of Toplady's work as a writer and editor. Four lines appeared in The Gospel Magazine in 1775, in an article encouraging readers troubled by sin to turn to Christ. The full hymn followed in March 1776, alongside a discussion of Britain's national debt. Toplady used the idea of a debt the country could never repay to explain why sinners depend on Christ. The hymn puts that dependence into two lines: "Nothing in my hand I bring, / Simply to thy cross I cling."
At its heart, the hymn is a prayer for refuge and forgiveness. The opening image recalls Moses sheltered in a cleft of the rock in Exodus 33, while the water and blood recall Jesus' pierced side in John 19. Toplady asks Christ for a "double cure," cleansing from both the guilt of sin and its continuing power. In the final stanza, as the singer imagines taking a last breath and standing before Christ in judgment, the hymn returns to its opening request, "Let me hide myself in Thee."
