Michigan State Representative Karen Whitsett has announced that she will step away from politics, saying her decision is rooted in a renewed commitment to her faith in Jesus Christ.

The Detroit Democrat revealed that she will not seek re-election and does not plan to run for public office again, describing the move as a deeply personal and spiritual decision. Whitsett, who began serving in the Michigan House of Representatives in 2023, will remain in office until January 1, 2027, but says her future will no longer involve political campaigns.

Her announcement has sparked significant discussion after she openly stated that her relationship with Jesus now takes priority over political life.

"My Responsibility Is to Stand in Truth"

Whitsett shared a strong message on Facebook following the announcement, explaining that her convictions come from a desire to live faithfully according to her beliefs.

"Those who understand, understand. Those who don't, don't," she wrote. "At the end of the day, every knee shall bow, and every tongue will confess. My responsibility is to stand in truth and walk in obedience - not to win approval."

She emphasized that her decisions are guided by her faith rather than public opinion.

"I don't need to justify my convictions. I answer to God first," Whitsett said, adding that she hopes the conversation surrounding her decision might inspire others to draw closer to God.

Conflict Between Faith and Party Platform

Whitsett explained in an interview with WDIV Local 4 that she has struggled to reconcile her Christian beliefs with the platform of the Democratic Party.

"For me, it is impossible to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ while remaining a member of the Democratic Party as it exists today," she said. "I cannot reconcile that platform with Scripture."

The Michigan lawmaker pointed to issues including abortion, gender identity, and the normalization of homosexuality as areas where she believes the party's stance conflicts with biblical teachings.

Whitsett acknowledged that navigating those tensions while serving in political office became increasingly difficult for her.

"I have compromised my relationship with Jesus for too long," she said. "I'm grateful God did not give up on me. He gave me time to repent, turn, and be fully devoted to Him."

A Spiritual Decision, Not a Political One

Whitsett made it clear that her departure from politics is not a strategic move but rather a response to her personal convictions.

"I will not be seeking re-election for this office, and I will not be running for any office ever again," she said. "This is not a political calculation - it's a spiritual decision."

She explained that politics often requires compromise, but she now feels called to stand firmly on what she believes is the truth of God's Word.

"I don't have a Heaven or Hell to put anyone in. Only God does," Whitsett said. "But I do have God's unwavering Word to stand on, and I can no longer compromise it to fit a party platform or to please people."

Influence of Lionheart Church

Whitsett also shared that her faith journey has been strengthened through her connection to Lionheart Church, a ministry based in Austell, Georgia.

Although she lives in Michigan, she and her husband participate in the church through its online campus, which has become a meaningful part of their spiritual life.

"My husband and I attend Lionheart Church online from Michigan," Whitsett said. "That ministry has helped shape our walk with Jesus Christ."

Led by Pastors Otha and LaRonna Turnbough, Lionheart Church has developed a significant digital following, with millions of followers on social media and a growing global ministry.

Faith and Public Life

Whitsett's decision highlights the continuing intersection of faith and public life, particularly for leaders who say their religious beliefs guide their decisions.

While she will complete her current term in the Michigan legislature, Whitsett says her future focus will be on deepening her faith and living in obedience to God.

For her, the choice ultimately came down to where her highest allegiance lies.

As she stated in her message, "My responsibility is to stand in truth and walk in obedience."
