Investigators examining the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, are exploring a new possibility that has drawn attention from both law enforcement experts and technology specialists: Could the suspect have used a Wi-Fi jammer to interfere with nearby security cameras?

Authorities have begun asking neighbors in the Tucson, Arizona community where Guthrie lived whether they experienced internet outages or unusual disruptions to home security systems around the time she vanished in early February. The questions come after reports that at least one nearby surveillance camera failed to capture footage during the overnight hours when Guthrie disappeared.

One neighbor told reporters that a security camera positioned closest to Guthrie's home showed its footage as "not available" during the critical timeframe. The unexplained gap in video has prompted speculation that the suspect may have used a device designed to disrupt wireless signals.

What Is a Wi-Fi Jammer?

A Wi-Fi jammer is a device that interferes with wireless communication by flooding radio frequencies with noise, preventing devices like routers, cameras, or smart doorbells from connecting to the internet. Because many modern home security systems rely on Wi-Fi networks, a jammer could potentially interrupt a camera's ability to send footage or alerts.

These devices are illegal to operate in the United States under Federal Communications Commission regulations. However, smaller versions can sometimes be purchased online, and law enforcement officials say similar devices have been used in recent burglary cases where suspects attempted to disable security systems.

Legal analyst Joshua Ritter said that if investigators confirm the use of such a device, it would suggest a significant level of preparation.

"It shows an astounding amount of planning if they were used," Ritter said while discussing the possibility.

Experts Question the Jammer Theory

Despite the speculation, some cybersecurity experts remain skeptical that a jammer was actually used in the Guthrie case.

Investigators were able to recover clear images from Guthrie's Nest doorbell camera, even though the device itself had reportedly been removed from the property. Experts say that if a strong jammer had been active near the front door for a prolonged period, it might have prevented the camera from capturing or transmitting those images.

Morgan Wright, CEO of the National Center for Open and Unsolved Cases, said the available footage raises questions about the jammer theory.

"If they were using Wi-Fi jammers, then I would expect that we would not be able to see any video from the front door cameras," Wright explained.

He also noted that routers typically cannot detect jammers directly, because the devices do not attempt to connect to the network like a normal device would. Instead, they simply overwhelm the wireless signal.

"The router won't see the jammer as a device," Wright said. "All an RF jammer does is flood a frequency band with noise so legitimate signals cannot be decoded."

Images of Suspect Remain Key Evidence

Earlier in the investigation, the FBI released images recovered from Guthrie's Nest doorbell camera showing a masked individual standing outside her home. The person appeared to be carrying a backpack and what looked like a holster.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the images show the same individual in each frame, but the footage remains one of the most significant pieces of evidence in the case. Some experts have also speculated that a device visible in the suspect's pocket might instead be part of a handheld radio, potentially used to communicate with another person nearby.

Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the suspect may have had an accomplice.

Investigation Continues

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has drawn national attention as investigators continue to examine digital evidence, surveillance footage, and witness reports in an effort to determine what happened.

Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward as the investigation continues.

For many observers, the case has also become a reminder of the growing intersection between technology and crime, as investigators increasingly rely on digital clues to reconstruct events and identify suspects.

In the midst of the uncertainty, many people have also expressed support for the Guthrie family, with messages of encouragement and prayer appearing outside Nancy Guthrie's home as the search for answers continues.
