In a time when many families are feeling the weight of rising fuel costs, one Tennessee church decided to turn concern into compassion-and put faith into action in a very practical way.
Overcoming Believers Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, recently hosted its annual "Gas & Glory" event, where hundreds of commuters received something unexpected at the pump: free gasoline.
Held at a local Thumbs Up Exxon station, the outreach served approximately 400 vehicles, with each driver receiving around $20 worth of free gas. For many, the timing couldn't have been better as gas prices continue to fluctuate amid global economic pressures.
But the event wasn't just about filling tanks-it was about filling hearts.
More Than Just Free Gas
Volunteers from the church didn't just stand by the pumps. They actively engaged with those waiting in line, offering prayer, encouragement, and even small acts of hospitality like candy for children and T-shirts for attendees.
According to church spokesperson Karen Swint, the event is designed to reflect the heart of their pastor and congregation.
"Senior Pastor Daryl Arnold has a heart for this community and is always wanting to help in whatever way he can," Swint shared.
The atmosphere was described as lively and welcoming, with volunteers making the wait part of the experience-offering games, conversation, and even assistance for vehicles that needed a jump-start.
A Simple Act With a Powerful Message
For Overcoming Believers Church, the goal goes beyond charity-it's about living out the Gospel in a tangible way.
Swint explained that the church believes in being "the hands and feet of Jesus," pointing to Scripture that calls believers to not only hear the Word, but to act on it.
"People need to see us be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ," she said.
"The Bible tells us to 'Go and make disciples.' I truly believe this is the best way to do it."
Rather than focusing solely on words, the church chose action-meeting a very real, everyday need in the community.
Faith That Meets People Where They Are
Overcoming Believers Church describes itself as a ministry committed to spreading the Gospel through both teaching and service. Events like "Gas & Glory" reflect that mission, combining worship with outreach in a way that meets people in their daily lives.
For many commuters, the experience may have started as a surprise at the pump-but it often ended with something more meaningful: a moment of kindness, prayer, and connection.
In a world often marked by uncertainty, gestures like this remind us that faith isn't just something spoken-it's something demonstrated.
A Growing Tradition of Generosity
This isn't the first time the Knoxville church has organized such an event, but according to Swint, this year was their most successful yet.
"This was our best year ever," she said. "It seems to get better each year."
As gas prices continue to impact households across the country, efforts like this show how local communities and churches can step in to provide relief-while also sharing hope in the process.
