American Idol's most nostalgic episode in years is four days away - and for the worship director from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the timing could not be better.

Original American Idol judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson are both returning to the show for the May 4 episode, serving as mentors for this season's Top 5 contestants. It marks the first time both have appeared together on the show in over a decade. Abdul will go further than mentor duty - she will also sit at the judges' panel as a guest judge alongside Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, giving the episode a judging table that spans the entire 24-year history of the franchise.

The episode is framed as a 20th High School Reunion celebration, and it goes deeper than just the returning judges. Fan favorites from the class of 2006 - the season that produced Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin, Paris Bennett, Kellie Pickler, and Bucky Covington - will return to the Idol stage to perform duets with each of the five remaining finalists. Host Ryan Seacrest, who has been with the show since its very first episode, described the reunion as something he genuinely cannot wait for. Lionel Richie said it plainly: "To us that's like the First Family. These are the originators. It's always great to have them here."

The five contestants who will be mentored by Abdul and Jackson are Keyla Richardson, Braden Rumfelt, Jordan McCullough, Hannah Harper, and Chris Tungseth. Heading into the episode, Hannah Harper leads the fan vote at 35.4%, with Keyla Richardson second at 21.5% and Jordan McCullough close behind at 19.4%. But the standings have already proven unpredictable - after Disney Night, a late surge actually flipped the poll results entirely, with Jordan taking the top spot before the final count settled.

For JubileeCast readers following Jordan McCullough's run on the show, Sunday is a critical moment. McCullough won one of only three Platinum Tickets this season - voted on by his fellow contestants after his performance of Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands" - and has described the experience as "stepping into full creativity of how God designed me to be." He has said his faith will always be the foundation, but that Idol has shown him that inspirational music does not only live inside the church. Having Paula Abdul in the room - one of the most instinctive vocal coaches the show has ever had - is exactly the kind of mentorship that could sharpen a voice already operating at this level.

May 4 is also worth noting for another reason: the late Mandisa, the Grammy-winning gospel singer who was a Top 10 contestant in the 2006 season being celebrated, passed away in 2024. Her presence will likely be honored during the reunion episode - a quiet but powerful reminder that the faith community has always had a seat at the American Idol table.

The Top 5 episode of American Idol airs Monday May 4 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+. The Top 3 will be determined by viewer vote live at the end of the night. The finale airs May 11.
