She said it was her favorite song she'd ever made. Now you can hear it for yourself.
Olivia Rodrigo officially released "The Cure" on Friday, May 22 - and it arrived exactly as she described: the kind of song that needs nearly five minutes to say what it came to say. The Filipina-American pop star confirmed the drop on Instagram with all-caps energy: "THE CURE SONG AND VIDEO IS OUT NOW!!!!! this song means so much to me and I'm so so so happy that it's out in the world!"
The track, co-written with longtime collaborator Dan Nigro and clocking in at 4 minutes and 57 seconds, is the second single from her upcoming third album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, due June 12 via Geffen Records. Rodrigo has since called it the album's thesis statement - the song that made everything else on the record click into place.
The music video, directed by Cat Solen and Jamie Gerin, places Rodrigo in a handmade, cardboard hospital - playing a mid-century nurse on a desperate search for a remedy for broken hearts. The visual takes a quiet turn: she eventually becomes the patient. It's a simple concept that lands harder than it has any right to.
The song itself explores the painful space between being loved and feeling healed - the tension of knowing someone is trying their best and still feeling like something is missing. For a young woman who has spoken openly about faith, vulnerability, and the emotional honesty that drives her writing, it's one of her most inward moments on record.
And while the name will inevitably invite comparisons to the British rock band - Rodrigo has confirmed the title is unrelated, even as she's one of their most vocal admirers - the song stands entirely on its own terms.
"The Cure" is streaming now on Spotify and Apple Music. The Unraveled Tour kicks off September 5 in Hartford, Connecticut.
