Bishop T.D. Jakes Breaks Down Recalling Daughter’s Devastating Neck Injury: ‘We Didn’t Know If She’d Make It’

Bishop T.D. Jakes has shared an emotional account of the terrifying accident that nearly claimed the life of his youngest daughter, Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts, revealing that a recent neck injury left her just an inch away from lifelong paralysis-or death.

Speaking on a recent episode of the NXT Chapter Podcast, Jakes opened up about the frightening ordeal that unfolded after receiving what he described as "the phone call no parent wants to get." Sarah Jakes Roberts, who alongside her husband Toure Roberts has assumed increasing leadership responsibilities within The Potter's House, suffered a severe neck injury while playing on a trampoline with her children.

According to Jakes, the accident occurred as Sarah sought to spend quality time with her family amid the demands of ministry and leadership. What began as a simple afternoon of recreation quickly turned into a medical emergency when she landed awkwardly and fractured her neck.

"They said she fell on the trampoline and we're sorry to tell you that she broke her neck. We don't know if she's going to make it," Jakes recalled.

The bishop admitted that his initial response was not calm faith but sheer panic.

"I'd love to tell you that I dropped down on my knees and immediately went into prayer. I went into panic. That's my baby. That's my child," he said candidly.

After being transported to a second hospital better equipped to handle the severity of her injuries, Sarah was evaluated by specialists who delivered sobering news. Doctors informed the family that the fracture occurred in an extraordinarily precise location.

"The doctor said that her neck was broken in such a unique place that had it been an inch lower, she would be paralyzed for life from the neck down, and an inch higher, she would have been dead," Jakes revealed.

Despite the severity of the injury, Sarah remained conscious and able to speak when her father arrived at the hospital. Jakes described seeing hope in her eyes despite immense pain and uncertainty surrounding her condition.

The pastor and bestselling author is still facing additional surgeries and ongoing treatment. Jakes noted that doctors continue to monitor her recovery closely as she works toward full healing.

Throughout the deeply personal conversation, Jakes used the experience to reflect on the fragility of life, gratitude, and faith during seasons of crisis. He challenged listeners not to take their loved ones for granted and encouraged families to pursue reconciliation before it is too late.

"If you got a child, love them. Kiss on them. Challenge them, but don't be stubborn. Forgive them," Jakes urged. "If you got a parent and you haven't worked everything out, reach over the breach and talk to them while they can hear you because tombstones don't listen and coffins don't answer."

The near-tragedy also prompted Jakes to revisit lessons he learned following his own health scare in 2024, when he survived a major heart attack. He said both experiences reinforced the reality that life can change in an instant and that no amount of success, influence, or preparation can eliminate vulnerability.

"There's a thin line between life and death," Jakes reflected repeatedly throughout the episode. "Don't consume mercy like it's candy and act like it's no big deal that you're still here."

Now 69 years old and approaching six decades in ministry, Jakes said the accident has deepened his appreciation for each day and strengthened his conviction that every moment is a gift from God.

While Sarah Jakes Roberts continues her recovery journey, the family remains grateful for what doctors described as a miraculous outcome. What could have resulted in paralysis or death instead became a powerful testimony of survival, faith, and grace.
