The BBC has commissioned a new four-part documentary series exploring the life of Jesus Christ, joining a wave of biblical programming that includes The Chosen and Prime Video's House of David. Produced by Wonderhood Studios - the team behind Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards - the series is set to premiere on BBC's broadcast networks and iPlayer in 2027.

The docuseries will combine biblical testimony, historical research, archaeological discoveries, and technological innovation to reconstruct the political, social, and cultural world Jesus lived in. Notably, the project draws contributions not only from Christian scholars but also from Jewish and Muslim faith leaders, aiming for a fuller historical picture of first-century Galilee.

"Jesus Christ is one of the most recognised and influential figures in human history - yet what we know about him comes from remarkably few sources," said Daisy Scalchi, the BBC's Head of Religion and Ethics, in the announcement. "This ambitious series will bring his life into focus like never before."

Wonderhood's creative director Tom Garton added that for Christians, Jesus "is far more than a figure of history: he is the Son of God" - a framing notably respectful of faith audiences from a major secular broadcaster.

The announcement lands amid what critics are calling a "biblical entertainment boom," with faith-based content increasingly finding mainstream footing - from The Chosen's crossover success to Kevin Costner's ABC Christmas special and Netflix's Ruth & Boaz.

For longtime believers, it's a reminder that the story of Jesus continues to command global attention nearly 2,000 years later.
