What was supposed to be a night of nonstop hits from Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire instead ended with an ambulance, hundreds of disappointed fans and a troubling medical mystery surrounding one of the legendary group's members.
Earth, Wind & Fire abruptly pulled out of its Thursday night, August 6, concert with Richie at San Francisco's Chase Center after an unidentified member of the band suffered a medical emergency shortly before showtime.
The situation was serious enough to bring emergency responders to the arena.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Fire Department was dispatched to Chase Center at approximately 5:30 p.m. One person was subsequently transported to a hospital by private ambulance. Authorities have not identified the individual or revealed the nature of the medical emergency.
That means fans are still left wondering exactly which member of Earth, Wind & Fire became ill.
The group's touring lineup includes legendary vocalist Philip Bailey, bassist Verdine White and drummer-percussionist Ralph Johnson, along with Myron McKinley, B. David Whitworth, John Paris and other musicians. There is currently no credible confirmation that any particular member was the person hospitalized, so speculation circulating online should be treated cautiously.
Earth, Wind & Fire broke the news in a statement, saying the band was "unable to perform as scheduled" because of a medical emergency involving one of its members.
"As a result, tonight's show with Lionel Richie will be rescheduled, with a new date to be announced soon," the group said, apologizing for the unexpected change.
The timing couldn't have been much worse for concertgoers.
Hundreds of fans had already descended on Chase Center expecting to hear Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire tear through decades of classics when word of the postponement arrived shortly before the concert was scheduled to begin. Police officers and venue employees reportedly helped direct disappointed attendees away from the arena.
Ticket holders have been told to hang onto their tickets, which will be honored when a replacement date is announced. Those unable to attend the eventual rescheduled performance can seek refunds through their original point of purchase.
Adding another layer of concern, this isn't the first medical scare to hit Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire's current Sing A Song All Night Long Tour.
Richie, 77, frightened fans during the tour's June 24 opening night in St. Paul, Minnesota, when he became dizzy while performing "Dancing on the Ceiling." He cut his performance short and subsequently postponed two concerts after doctors advised him to rest.
Thankfully, Richie later received medical clearance and returned to the stage.
Now, just weeks later, another health emergency has disrupted the same tour - this time involving someone from Earth, Wind & Fire.
The two legendary acts have been touring together for three consecutive years, making the sudden San Francisco postponement particularly disappointing for longtime fans who had waited to see the hit-packed double bill.
For now, the biggest question remains unanswered: Who suffered the medical emergency, and how are they doing?
Neither Earth, Wind & Fire nor representatives for Richie have publicly identified the affected musician or provided an update on that person's condition.
The tour is scheduled to continue with additional California performances before concluding August 14. Whether the medical emergency will affect those upcoming dates has not yet been announced.
Until then, fans of the legendary "September," "Shining Star" and "Let's Groove" hitmakers will be hoping that whoever was taken to the hospital makes a speedy recovery.
