Harold Greene, the award-winning television journalist who became a familiar presence in Southern California homes during decades of local news coverage, has died at 82.
His daughter, Courtney Greene, announced that he died Tuesday night, November 3, with his wife and daughter beside him. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed.
"He was so very loved, and we know he will be missed by many," Courtney wrote in her tribute.
Greene began his journalism career in 1970 as a producer and reporter. His work took him to San Diego and San Francisco before he returned to Los Angeles, where he would spend much of his broadcasting career.
His longest stretch at ABC7 began in 1982 and continued until 2000. Over those years, he anchored several of the station's major broadcasts, including its 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. Those assignments made him a regular part of viewers' afternoons and evenings, delivering both breaking stories and the daily news of Southern California.
His career later included roles at KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV, extending his presence in the Los Angeles television market until his departure in 2008. He worked alongside several other familiar local broadcasters, including Ann Martin and sportscaster Jim Hill.
Greene's reporting and anchoring earned multiple Emmy, Golden Mike and Edward R. Murrow awards. He was also honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognising his contribution to television.
ABC7 paid tribute to its former anchor, saying the station was mourning his loss and remembering the impact he had on colleagues throughout the newsroom.
His family plans to hold a memorial service after the holidays. Friends, former colleagues and viewers have been invited to share photographs and memories in his honour.
