New York-based world rock fusion duo Novus Cantus has released "Down in the Valley," a haunting and deeply personal single shaped by themes of depression, spiritual longing and faith. Led by brothers Alexander and Christian Herasimtschuk, the track captures an emotionally vulnerable moment that took three years to find its way into the world.
The song's defining vocal performance originated on a late October night in 2023, when Alexander, an Episcopal priest, recorded what would eventually become the final vocal take. Rather than delivering a polished performance, he allowed himself to sing quietly and naturally, capturing the exhaustion, numbness and hopelessness associated with depression.
Alexander explained that he envisioned the emotional weight of depression while recording, allowing the vulnerability of that moment to shape his delivery. Although other vocal takes initially seemed stronger, the brothers eventually recognized that the quieter October recording carried the emotional honesty the song needed.
The melody first came to Alexander weeks earlier while visiting a beach, but finding the right vocal approach required considerable time and experimentation.
"Down in the Valley" also reflects Alexander's personal experiences and spiritual perspective. Its lyrics draw inspiration from the Psalms, including the imagery of lifting one's eyes toward the hills while enduring a difficult season. Through references to biblical suffering, the Exodus and the Holy Land, the song connects personal struggles with deeper questions of faith.
The musical arrangement brings together classical guitar, Middle Eastern percussion and atmospheric vocals. Christian contributed an experimental drum recording featuring two doumbeks and a shaker, which ultimately became a defining element of the track. The unexpected addition gave the song a distinctive Middle Eastern character while complementing its spiritual themes.
The brothers independently produced the single, with mixing completed at BlueSky Studios in Delmar, New York, and mastering by Le Lab in Montreal. The artwork features photography by longtime friend Jim MacBrien, using dramatic lighting to create a striking visual atmosphere.
The accompanying music video was also a hands-on production. The brothers borrowed camera equipment, including a GoPro12 from Christian's local public library in Bethlehem, New York, and a Canon Rebel from a friend. Working with their own creative ideas and resources, they completed the video within a week of filming.
Originally from Poughkeepsie, New York, and now based between Wappingers Falls and Albany, Alexander and Christian founded Novus Cantus in 2010. Their distinctive sound blends rock, flamenco and Middle Eastern influences, with Alexander playing classical guitar, tiple, charango, Iraqi oud and ukulele, while Christian contributes Latin and African percussion, pan flute and bass. Both brothers also provide vocals.
The duo has gained recognition for its creative reinterpretations of songs by Jefferson Airplane, the Rolling Stones, Nirvana and Rusted Root. Novus Cantus has also received two nominations for World Music Artist of the Year at the Thomas Edison Awards and has appeared on WMHT's AHA! A House for Arts and WEXT Radio's Local 518 Sessions.
With "Down in the Valley," Novus Cantus offers listeners an intimate musical reflection on the difficult seasons of life, showing how personal vulnerability, artistic expression and spiritual reflection can come together in a powerful song.
