HGTV star Ben Napier says he stays out of his family's finances on purpose, while his wife, Erin Napier, credits God for how things have turned out.
Ben made the comments on a recent episode of Talk To Me: The Debra Fileta Podcast, as reported by TV Insider. He joked that he doesn't know how much money the couple has and has no access to it, because he would spend it on things they don't need. Erin said she is the one who keeps a close eye on their finances and keeps the family responsible.
The couple traced their different views on money to how they grew up. Erin said her family had plenty, with a father who worked as a physical therapist and chicken farmer, but her requests were usually met with a no. Ben said his family had to fight for every penny.
He recalled his father losing everything financially after a bad year of farming. Years later, his father became a minister. Ben said he realized during a school social studies class that his family was living below the poverty line, after working out how much the churches paid his father each year.
Erin's answer was simple: "God always provided." She added that timing played a major role in their marriage and in both sets of parents' lives. Ben said there were seasons when they had no money coming in, but Erin said they always had what they needed.
The couple met as students at Jones County Junior College in 2004 and married in 2008. Home Town premiered on HGTV in 2016, and they have two daughters, Helen and Mae. Erin and Ben are currently filming Season 11.
